March 2024: Rough Sea and Stormy Clouds (A) added to my Miscellaneous Gallery. Acrylic painting on 40x60cm deep canvas. Really liked the movement and blue/green highlights in the sea and the contrasts in the sky.
February 2024: Sunset Sea 2 (A) added to my Miscellaneous Gallery. Acrylic painting on 12"x32" canvas. As promised, the 2nd in my mini-series of sunset sea paintings.
December 2023: Sunset Sea 1 (A) added to my Miscellaneous Gallery. Acrylic painting on 12"x32" canvas. Really pleased with how this one turned out. Planning to follow the theme in 2024!
December 2023: Rough Sea (P) added to my Miscellaneous Gallery. Another drawing using Faber Castell Polychromos pencils on Royal Talens Rembrandt toned paper. I wanted to see how much detail and atmosphere I could produce with just pencils from this public-domain image.
November 2023: Relaxed Leopard (P) added to my Africa Gallery. Based on own photo from Kruger National Park, South Africa in 2018. Another drawing using Faber Castell Polychromos pencils on Royal Talens Rembrandt toned paper. I started this months ago, but finally finished it.
March 2023: Three Guineafowl (A) added to my Africa Gallery. Compilation from my South African safari photographs. Acrylic painting on 12x32in canvas.
March 2023: Botswana Elephants (W) added to my Africa Gallery. A return to watercolour painting, from own photo taken on our first African Safari holiday in 2011.
March 2023: Lilac Breasted Roller (P) added to my Africa Gallery. Already framed for the Ashby Art Club Easter Exhibition! Drawn from own photo, again taken in the Kruger National Park, South Africa in 2018. Another drawing using Faber Castell Polychromos pencils on Royal Talens Rembrandt toned paper.
February 2023: Eagle Nebula (A) added to my Miscellaneous Gallery. I started this painting several months ago, but set it aside. Picked up again this month and finished it! The Eagle Nebula is the latest in my series of Galaxies/Nebulae acrylic on canvas paintings. It fitted a 20x50cm canvas nicely.
February 2023: Purple Roller (W) added to my Africa Gallery. Photographed this bird (and numerous other animals!) in the Kruger National Park, South Africa in 2018. He was sitting on top of an acacia bush, surveying his domain.
February 2023: Fried Egg (A) added to my Miscellaneous Gallery. And now for something completely different! Been thinking about trying this one for a few years. came out quite well, I think.
November 2022: Four Tulips (W) added to my Miscellaneous Gallery. First watercolour completed in six months! Sourced again from photographs I took at Keukenhof Gardens in the Netherlands.
August 2022: Heart Nebula (A) added to my Miscellaneous Gallery. Back to acrylics on canvas for the third in my Galaxy series. Part of the Heart and Soul Nebulae.
July 2022 Fantail and Koru (P) added to Australasia Gallery. Commission for daughter and grandchildren, following Pukeko drawing. Koru (Māori for "loop or coil") is an integral symbol in Māori art, carving and tattooing, where it symbolises new life, growth, strength and peace. Again using Faber Castell Polychromos pencils on Royal Talens Rembrandt toned paper.
June 2022 Pukeko (P) added to Australasia Gallery. A further drawing using Faber Castell Polychromos pencils on Royal Talens Rembrandt toned paper. Saw lots of these in New Zealand on the reserve behind our daughter's house.
May 2022: Bird in Flight (P) added to my Miscellaneous Gallery. Another drawing using Faber Castell Polychromos pencils on Royal Talens Rembrandt toned paper. I liked the movement captured in this drawing.
March 2022: Zebras (W) added to my Africa Gallery. Back to Africa, zebras and watercolours, again. Sorry, but I do love painting zebras! I liked the zebra close-up that I did in acrylics a couple of years ago, so I thought I would try something in a similar vein, but in watercolours this time. The out of focus background contrasted well with the detail of the two zebra heads in the foreground.
March 2022: Galaxy (A) added to my Miscellaneous Gallery. I enjoyed doing the Nebula painting so much that I thought I'd try another in that vein.
February 2022: Nebula (A) added to my Miscellaneous Gallery. I've been planning to do this for a couple of years. By the end of it, I was seeing stars before my eyes!
February 2022: Kingfisher 2 (W) added to my Miscellaneous Gallery. Back to watercolours; it's been a while!
November 2021: Poppies 2021 (A) added to my Miscellaneous Gallery. This years painting taking part in the Ashby Arts Festival 2021 Poppy Trail comprising 100 paintings by local artists to commemorate Remembrance Day.
August 2021: Leopard close-up (A) added to my Africa Gallery. Been very unproductive for some months! Resumption of Ashby Art Club sessions helped me motivate myself to get back painting. Anyway, I eventually finished this acrylic on canvas which I had been working on over several months.
October 2020: Venice Grand Canal (A) added to my Italy Gallery. One I did this summer. After Claude Monet's original, this gave me the opportunity to experiment with a looser style in acrylics. Apart from the obvious distraction, which I won't name, it's been a pretty good summer and I've spent a good amount of time outdoors walking, bowling and gardening, but a lot less time painting. Now Autumn is here, I'll be dusting off my paints and pencils and hopefully have something to show for it soon.
April 2020: Rose (P) added to my Miscellaneous Gallery. Another pencil drawing using Faber Castell Polychromos pencils.
February 2020: Sunflowers (P) added to my Miscellaneous Gallery. What, no animals? Another sketch using Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils. That's the website been up and running for 7 years now and this is my 122nd picture.
January 2020: Male Lion (A) added to my Africa Gallery. Happy New Year! We saw this lion in a private reserve in the Kruger, South Africa. He was a magnificent specimen.
November 2019: Zebra Family on a Dusty Road (W) added to my Africa Gallery. Based this painting on another of my own photos, from safari in Kruger, South Africa.
October 2019: Zebra Head (A) added to my Africa Gallery. Back to acrylics for a rework of one of my favourite own photos, in Zambia. In contrast with my prior watercolour (painted way back in December 2003), this time I've included the background.
September 2019: Young Lion Close-up (P) added to my Africa Gallery. After our 6 week visit to New Zealand, I've finally finished this drawing! Again, I used Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils.
June 2019: Tulips 1 (W) added to Miscellaneous Gallery. I composed this painting based on a selection of photos which I had taken at Keukenhof Gardens in the Netherlands. The range of varieties, shapes and colours there were amazing and I hope this first effort does them justice.
June 2019: Abstract No 1 (A) added to Miscellaneous Gallery. With a small nod in the direction of Jackson Pollock, hence the "No 1", I had a play with Acrylics and Pouring Medium to produce this abstract.
April 2019: White Rhino (W) added to my Africa Gallery. We saw this rhino up close in South Africa's Kruger. Apologies for delay in completing/adding this painting. I was unwell and then in New Zealand for a month, so it took me a while to finish this. I hope it was worth the wait.
January 2019: Two Zebras (W) added to my Africa Gallery. A new year and a new painting. This is another sourced from our South Africa safari trip, subtitled "does my b*m look big in this?".
November 2018: Lightning Tree (A) added to Miscellaneous Gallery. And now for something completely different! Atmospheric acrylic on canvas. I'd been thinking about doing something along these lines for a while. Glad I did.
November 2018: Three Cheetahs at Waterhole (W), has been added to my Africa Gallery. This is my second picture sourced from our 2018 South Africa safari holiday. It was amazing seeing these three brothers posing together at a waterhole in Karongwe Game Reserve, in Limpopo. Magical!
October 2018: Remember (A) added to Miscellaneous Gallery. I painted this acrylic on canvas painting as part of participation in the Ashby Poppy Trail, which includes 100 paintings to be displayed throughout Ashby de la Zouch, on the theme of remembrance as part of the 100 year Armistice anniversary.
September 2018: Cheetah Resting (P), has been added to my Africa Gallery. This is the first sourced from our 2018 South Africa Safari holiday, where we saw this majestic young male cheetah in the Karongwe Game Reserve, in Limpopo. I did this drawing with Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils and this is my first picture using these.
September 2018: It's been a while since my last update, 6 months in fact. I hope it was worth the wait! The long hot British summer had me doing a lot of outdoor stuff, instead of art. We also had a safari holiday in South Africa in June, which has provided me with enough subject matter to keep me going for years!
My latest painting, Leopard Stroll (W), has been added to my Africa Gallery. This is a revisit of a prior painting based on a Botswana Safari holiday. Preparing for this year's safari holiday got me in the mood, so I started it way back in April and have finally finished it. I also bought some Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils and had to have a play with them (see above), extending the delay in finishing this painting. But now it's done. Enjoy.

July 2018 Puffins (W) has also been added to Miscellaneous Gallery. I actually completed this post card size painting in June, but I had to keep it under wraps until at least August, as it was entered into the Secret Art Basingstoke exhibition, in aid of Basingstoke NCT. Visit their website to see all of the art donated for a very worthy cause.
March 2018: Pied Kingfisher (W) added to Africa Gallery. These black and white versions, of their more colourful European cousins, live in Africa. I spotted these on a river safari in Chobe Safari Park, Botswana.
February 2018: Red Rose (A) added to Miscellaneous Gallery. Just for a change, I experimented with acrylics and structured gel on canvas to create a 3D effect.
February 2018: Miniature Flowers (W) added to Miscellaneous Gallery. I painted these for inclusion in a floral collage for the Ashby Art Club 2018 Easter Exhibition prize draw.
February 2018: Elephant Mud Bath (W) added to Africa Gallery. Another sighting at a mud hole in the Chobe Safari Park, Botswana. This young female was enjoying spraying mud over herself. Thankfully, we were out of range!
January 2018: Old Man of Storr, Isle of Skye (W) added to Scotland Gallery. We visited Skye way back in 2004 and this rock formation in Trotternish was a lasting memory. Haven't done a proper landscape for some time now, what with my "extended wildlife phase"!
